In March 2024, Espacio Fenomena hosted something very close to the heart: our very first retreat. It was also the first retreat for Lucía, founder of The Sun Collective, who had just begun her journey creating unique artistic experiences here in Lanzarote. Though we barely knew each other, there was an immediate sense of mutual support, we both understood the courage it takes to launch something new and to bring a creative vision to life.

For this special event, Lucía collaborated with Portuguese watercolor artist Johny Vieira, whose work is deeply inspired by the ocean and his years as a passionate surfer. Together, they crafted an experience that combined watercolor, surf, and the raw beauty of Lanzarote into a four-day creative immersion.

Throughout the retreat, participants explored wet-on-wet watercolor techniques under Johny’s expert guidance. The focus? Learning how to capture the movement of the sea, waves, and surfers with a light and dynamic touch. Every day was filled with practice, experimentation, and flow, both in the studio and in the water.

The program also included a local surf session, giving participants the chance to feel the waves from within, adding an embodied layer to their artistic process. Evenings were spent sharing meals, stories, and laughter over vibrant Spanish cuisine.

It was an unforgettable few days: full of discovery, creativity, and deep connection with both nature and fellow artists. By the end of the retreat, everyone left with not only beautiful watercolor pieces, but also a renewed sense of inspiration and we were reminded, once again, of the magic that happens when art and community come together.
