A day in the South of Lanzarote

A sculpture with soul, a turquoise beach, and a sunset wine.

Some places on Lanzarote are passed by without a second thought and that’s exactly why they deserve a closer look. Start your day with a visit to Monumento al Campesino, also known as the Monument to Fertility. Designed by César Manrique, it’s a tribute to the men and women who shaped this volcanic island with their bare hands and deep-rooted resilience. The sculpture itself is striking, but don’t miss the Casa Museo del Campesino just next to it.

This beautifully restored farmhouse was another of Manrique’s ways of preserving Canarian culture and architecture. Inside, you’ll find old tools, everyday objects and traditional designs that help you connect with Lanzarote’s rural soul. The on-site restaurant is also worth noting, classic Canarian dishes, done right. Definitely worth adding to your list.

From here, you’ve got two solid options:

  • If the sun’s already high and the sea is calling, head straight for Papagayo Beach.
  • If it feels a bit early for swimming, make a stop at a local winery in the area of La Geria. There’s no wrong choice—Bodega Rubicón, El Grifo, Los Bermejos, or even tiny family-run ones… each has its charm.

Not quite ready for a glass of wine? Then onward to Papagayo, your next stop down south.

To get there, you’ll enter a protected area there’s a small fee of around €3 per car. You can drive most of the way or, if you’re up for a short walk, park near the Sandos Beach Resort and follow the path along the coast. It’s about an hour return, and along the way you’ll pass smaller coves that tend to be quieter than the main beach.

Bring your snorkelling mask the rocky corners are full of little fish, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a shy octopus. There’s a chiringuito (beach bar), but it gets busy. A picnic or homemade sandwich is honestly just as good, maybe even better.
But if you prefer a restaurant after your beach time, head inland to Bodega de Santiago in Yaiza for a late lunch classic, peaceful and very, very good.

And just before you call it a day, make your way to El Chupadero, one of the best places to enjoy a wine at sunset. The view across La Geria’s moonlike landscape is unforgettable. But take note: as soon as the sun dips, it can get chilly fast. From bikini to fleece in minutes so keep a warm layer in the car.

And that’s your day!
