Now let me explain why and how to build the perfect suitcase.
If you’re staying at Espacio Fenómena, it’s important to know that you’ll be based in the central-northern part of Lanzarote. And that makes a difference.
There’s a clear contrast between the north, central-north and west of the island and the south-southeast when it comes to climate. The north is more humid, more rugged, and more exposed to the prevailing winds. The south, on the other hand, is sunnier, drier, and warmer.
This is also why most of the island’s tourism has developed in the south and southeast. Personally, I find it the least authentic part more crowded, more built-up, and less interesting overall.
Another thing to keep in mind: Lanzarote has a noticeable temperature drop between day and night, often around 8–10°C, especially in summer. During the day, temperatures can easily reach 25–30°C, while at night they drop to around 15–20°C. Being just 100 km from the Sahara definitely plays its part.
In summer, the trade winds push low clouds towards the north coast, creating what we call the “panza de burro” effect in Famara. These clouds get trapped against the cliffs, forming a natural shade. So while the south might be sunny and hot, the north can feel cooler, greyer, and more humid.
My best advice? Dress like an onion, layer up.
That way you can adapt throughout the day. You might leave the house in a fleece in the morning, end up swimming at midday in a sheltered spot, and then need that same fleece again for dinner by the sea in El Golfo.
Bring versatile pieces. A pareo, for example, is a must: it can be a beach towel, a scarf, a beach wrap, or even a picnic blanket for your adventures.
And of course, your Lanzarote essentials: swimsuit, towel, cap, sunglasses, hiking shoes, flip-flops, sunscreen, a fleece, shorts and long trousers.
And for those visiting in winter, yes, the weather is still better than almost anywhere else…
but don’t forget, it’s still winter.
